“Lordy Lordy Look Who’s 40”
I remember the day I made it to my 40th birthday. I made it to the half way point. So far so good. No mid-life crisis to talk about...I haven’t had the urge to run out and get a slick new sports car.
I spent my birthday doing the thing I enjoy the most in life… That’s being with my family. Spending time with my wife and kids gives me such a feeling of vitality. They play a big role in keeping me youthful. Right now I’m doing my second favorite thing… the other thing that keeps me young, at least in heart and soul, that’s WORK.
I Used to Hate Being a Life Insurance Agent
Now you probably know it wasn’t always like this for me. In fact I used to hate work. I’d dread getting up in the morning. I would actually get knots in my stomach on my way into the office thinking about starting my day with a long “ICE COLD” list of hostile people to call.
Things are much different for me now. Since I started taking charge of my life and responsibility for my results...everything has continued to fall into place for me.
Ya see, I realized that the bogus prospecting methods I was learning from my sales manager just didn’t make sense and on top of that, “it just didn’t work.” I knew deep down inside there had to be a better way. Every thing I had learned up to that point went against human nature. It never made sense to me to try to force people to do something that they don’t want to do.
When I finally discovered the secret to attract people that are already interested in what I had to offer and the fact that hot life insurance leads would call me..I knew I struck gold. My life and attitude changed from that point on. I instantly became a new person. I was no longer a slave to the “NORM” of life insurance sales and financial services. I guess you could say I’m a rebel.
Claim Responsibility for Your Actions
I’m gonna explain how I think and feel about work (and life) now that I have control over it...that I claim responsibility for my actions or lack of action. And that I am not going to get caught up in a “victim mentality.”
Think back to a time when you were a kid… maybe it was a time when you were on summer break… or maybe it was a time when you were on vacation… “You wake up early… You walk outside… You sit down on the step. As you sit there, in the warm beams of light from the morning sun, you think to yourself, “There’s nothing I have to do!” Everything is taken care of. But along with this relaxing calm and sense of freedom is a desire to do things. There’s a lively energy brewing inside you...a will to get active and make things happen.
This is the feeling I have at the beginning of every day, and it’s a GREAT place to be mentally!
A traveler once came across a man sitting under a tree...The traveler asked the man, “Can you tell me how to get to Mt. Olympia?” The man replied, “If you really want to get to Mt. Olympia, all you have to do is make sure every step you take is in that direction.” I think that right there hits the nail on the head. This wise philosopher was Socrates.
If every step you take is in the direction of where you want to be then you are bound to get there. Your goals are your road map. Keep on course.
